If you're going to San Fransisco...

You'll find free wireless internet because that's a fundamental human right!

Best part?

The mayor said he had no exact figures on how much it would cost to build a wireless umbrella to cover the entire city, but cited general estimates that have ranged from $8 million to $16 million for antennas and other gear.

"My intent is to have the taxpayers pay little or nothing," Newsom said of the municipal wireless project.

Phew! I was a little worried there when I saw that politician didn't know how much something was going to cost cause that's ALWAYS trouble, but then I felt better when I found out he didn't intend for the taxpayers to pay for it (well, mabye a little). Countdown til the first objector is branded a racist on the grounds that he hates minorities and doesn't want them on the internet beeegggiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnssss.......NOW!

As a Southern Dem, I'm always a little leery of my WC counterparts. Check this out, though: SF is right next to Silicon Valley. It's the gov't-big business sexual rugby scrum again!
If this guy was more, erm, liberal, he would be using the $16 million to fight the city's heinous homeless problem and (the related) way-the-fuck-too-high housing costs.

that's the thing that pisses me off most about these sort of deals. asshole is blatantly buying votes from the middle class by promising free shit and trying to wrap it in the flag of civil rights and worrying about lower income families. really, how many low income families are walking around with laptops thinking "why oh why can't i get some wifi around here?!" i'm pretty sure they are more interested in getting bills paid and food on the table before worrying about checking their e-mail in the park. hell, i'm the picture of middle class whitebreaddom and i don't have wireless internet i don't need it or care about it and damn sure ain't looking at it as a failure of the government's to ensure my basic liberties as guaranteed in the constitution. if this guy really cared he'd do something to help them reach a level where wireless internet is a pressing concern and stop pandering for votes. every politician does it whether they have an R or a D by their name and it's the exact reason why i'm straight out of the anarchist wing of the GOP. screw the gov't.
