804) The Big Empty. Well I'll be...If you make Darryl Hannah look NOTHING like Darryl Hannah, she can be pretty hot.

804 down, 196 to go.

- I was about half way through All the Fine Young Cannibals when Charity came over and we wound up just hanging out and talking for a few hours. It was fun, but these girls are getting to be a serious impediment. I'm going to have to go full on hermit here soon.

Alright, I've scanned through some of the nearly 800 flix that you watched and I think i have a little sense for what you might like. The following are my recommendations to round out your 1000 movies based what I can tell from some of your comments. Mind you, you may have listed some of these as I didn't read your entire list.

1) Kicking and Screaming (not the Will Farrell one, but the one with Eric Stoltz and Chris Eigman)... if you like it, try Mr. Jealousy. Not as good except that it has a 10 minute scene in therapy that is priceless. On the downside, it is not available on DVD for some weird reason. If this type of humor works for you, try Barcelona as well.

2) Maria Full of Grace. Amazingly, it is written and directed by an American with no latin background. If you like that, try City of God (which you listed, but I don't think it was the right title based on your review).

3) Moulin Rouge... you seem to like lighting, use of color and shadow, with a mix of an occassional musical, so this fits the bill.

4) The Butterfly. Good coming of age Spanish flick.

5) For something a little trippy with a great musical score to boot, try the Mystery of Rampo(Japanese).

6) If you like asian food with a nice family story mixed in, Eat Drink Man Woman is a poignant movie.

7) If you want to try some documentary fair that isn't too heavy, Spellbound is a good choice.

8)In the mood for Artsy Fartsy Euro stuff? Blue, White, Red are good. Interesting camera work and color saturation. Red is my fav of the 3.

9) For Iranian minimalism I'd recommend Children of Heaven (which actually inspired Zhang Yimou to scale back his productions for a while, leading to his direction of The Road Home)

10) For mindless German Techno brain candy try Run Lola Run.

Sincerely,

Stranko, thanks for the recs. I've seen 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 10 before and Spellbound is already in my Netflix queue. Mystery of Rampo sounds interesting so I'll add it and I've heard about Children of Heaven and it sounds pretty good. Look for them in the next few weeks.

Since you've seen kicking and screaming (a must see for all liberal arts majors), then perhaps you can solve one of the great mysteries for me. Why can you get Teen Wolf Too on DVD but not a classic like Kicking and Screaming? Life just isn't fair sometimes.

as with everything else in life, it's all in the money. if dvd releases were fair then all of the newsradio episodes would be out by now. suckers like me will shell out for crap that everyone's heard of like teen wolf too if it's on the 6.99 shelf at target figuring "well, that's almost as cheap as renting it" but something like kicking and screaming that they've never heard of they pass by. and i know you're not knocking Teen Wolf Too, possibly the greatest unnecessary sequel of all time!
